COMMENTARY

A commentary is an objective opinion given by one or two camera persons. It is a value judgment based on substantial research and backed up with statistical evidence to support the stance taken by the person on camera. The objective of a commentary is to complement the reporting about a current issue, to discuss and evaluate the issue and show possible consequences. A commentary delivers an objective opinion about an issue and aims to make the audience think about things for themselves. They are generally 2:00 to 4:00 minutes in length. Students in both Broadcasting 1 and Broadcasting 2 were challenged with the task of creating commentary pieces which include on-air talent, background footage, and graphics to help keep the audience engaged to the information presented. In class, we often refer to it as a visual essay
